Hello, this is MusiCommentator. It's been a while since I've written a song review! I think the last time was a review of the "Pop Out" song on the Polo G, and it's been over a month since he did. Since song reviews are one of my favorites on this blog, I decided to go back to the charts and see which popular songs I can do song reviews on they have the most It's also another good reason, because it gets views. you probably read the title, so you already know which song I'm reviewing.
I've talked about these two artists before on this blog. Shawn Her Mendes Self Her titled album ranked among the top 10 best her albums of 2018 due to its mature sounding instrumentals and improved songwriting skills. But I was never a fan of his music before this album cycle. His one new single, "If I Can't Have You," is an incredibly disappointing one (I may write a review on this later.) It's safe to say I'm lost about Sean's music. But my feelings for Camila Cabello are much clearer.
"I love how you call me Senorita
I wish I could pretend I didn't need you
But every touch is ooh-la-la-la
It's true la la la
oh i have to run
oh you let me catch you
We got off to a rocky start with Camila Cabello singing the first chorus of th song. The first few lines are enough, but "every touch ooh-la-la-la"? Are you kidding me? As you know, one of the things I love about music in general is the image it can represent. Because by combining music and lyrics, you can paint a picture that other media cannot. So what did Camila decide to do to show that she loves her partner? She describes his touch as "woo la la la." What is this elementary school's BS? Even if you think you should run away from someone, don't go back to them. Have you learned anything from the #MeToo movement?
"Landing in Miami
The air was hot with the summer rain
dripping sweat
Before I knew her name
Luckily, Shawn comes along and provides some of the great romantic imagery found in songs on Shawn Mendes' albums. He sets the scene incredibly well by focusing on the minute details to really show the audience his emotions during their first meeting.
“It felt like ooh-la-la-la”
Of course, he has to ruin that imagery and tension by throwing THIS in there, but whatever.
“Sapphire moonlight
We danced for hours in the sand
Tequila Sunrise
Her body fit right in my hands”
This, again, displays that descriptive imagery that really sets the mood for the rest of the song. While it is a bit cheesy and stereotypical of a song like this, I really think this helps set up their romantic intentions very well as the song progresses.
“I love it when you call me señorita
I wish I could pretend I didn't need ya
But every touch is ooh-la-la-la
It's true, la-la-la”
For the rest of the choruses in this song, Shawn and Camila sing together, which is common in duets like this, but why is Shawn saying “I love it when you call me señorita”? She shouldn't call you that, man. Genius knows that she says she only sings the "me" line. This means Shawn is singing "I love it when you call, señorita." It makes more sense, but the fact that additional research had to be done to confirm it was a heterosexual male singer.
