Ghost of the past

A remote community and a dynasty in Yoruba land, has a leader revered and loved known as oba Oyewunmi Jagun Oyeleru the second; he prid himself by displaying trophies gift and artifacts from his conquest. The royal monachs respect him and sing his praise every now and then, his wisdom is known far from the shores of seven kingdoms and other kings travel from far bearing gifts and paying tributes just to be blessed by him.

Ajekasiyin is the head community of seven other kingdoms and it is a secure dome for other smaller communities, they usually have three festivals in a year, the odun Alafia, odun Egun and Oro awo, of the three the most joyous and the one old and young look forward to is the Odun Alafia because it is during this period the elites of the community spread their generosity to all and sundry 7 days of stories, awards, dance and merriments’ across the kingdom and it is at this festival the king usually choose his new bride.

Odun Egun on the other hand is usually done midyear where the communities celebrate the demy gods like Sango the god of thunder and lightning, Obatala the god of light, Logunede the god of all warriors and hunters, Ogun, Oya, Yemowo and so many others, they are spirit beings and therefore the families who worships them do come out in mass to display, celebrate and worship them.

The deadliest and feared of all the festival is the Odun Awo: this festival is done for seven good days of lockdown during the day i.e no one is to be caught outside during the day, any one seen by the gods outside during the day cease to be a human being from that moment, people disregard the rules end up missing, plagued or coursed. the festival consists of extraordinary display of power among the deities and sacrifices by high chief priests and sub chief priest to appease the gods for peace, progress and more wealth in the Kingdom.

This fateful evening as the sun set for the airy wind to blow the trees, the birds announced its welcome as they happily chip in the sky Amole the palm wine tapper open his stead and brought out the benches for the elders to sit and his table was set for the evening wine, just a block after Iya Eleko muttering to her self suddenly shouted Bisi gbeko ati eni Jade (Bisi bring out the matt and pap cake), Bisi whose song was interrupted by her mother’s call hurried brought out the matt, spread it and set the table for Eko tutu. The matt is the strategy for the quick sale of Eko tutu the children are always eager to buy and listen to the moon light stories from iyami Eleko little wonder she is famous beautiful and interesting historical stories in the community for this just as Iyami eleko was about to start the sales of the evening we heard eulogizing chants and talking drum from a distance! Ayanlude and crew!! The evening just came alive!!!
